1. The passenger pigeon and the human influence
“When an individual is seen gliding through the woods and close to the observer, it passes like a thought, and on trying to see it again, the eye searches in vain; the bird is gone.” John Audubon on the passenger pigeon. The passenger pigeon is an example of probably the most terrible mass slaughter in the history of wildlife. Students should not have any difficulty finding information on this subject.

2. Extinction is forever
Students may wish to research either an extinct animal or one that is endangered. Animals, other than the passenger pigeon, that are extinct as a result of humans include the quagga (a horse-like relative of the zebra), the great northern sea cow, the spectacled cormorant, and the dodo bird.
