Activity 5: Inquiring Further

1. Investigating allelopathy

Let students know that allelochemicals can be found in leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and fruits of plant. Leaves are the major source in most species. The roots generally produce smaller quantities and the compounds are less toxic than those found in the leaves. They will need to know this in order to design an experiment.

2. Invasive species

As mentioned earlier, the government maintains extensive databases on invasive species. These databases are easily accessible by the Internet. Some of these databases are regional in scope. Students can use these databases to find the names of invasive species in their area.

Assessment Opportunity
Whether students actually carry out the experiment, this Inquiring Further provides excellent practice in designing an experiment. It could provide an opportunity to assess if students understand the idea of variables and the need for controls in an experiment.
