Activity 5: Learning Strategies for Students with Limited English Proficiency

1. Point out new vocabulary in context. Practice using the words as much as possible.

competition nonnative invasive

2. Although only a couple of new vocabulary words are introduced in this activity, some of the reading in the BioTalk may challenge students with limited English proficiency. The following sentences in the Student Edition on page 543 can be illustrated with pictures:

“The spread of nonnative organisms destroys healthy, diverse ecosystems. It replaces them with biologically impoverished, homogeneous landscapes.”

Have students search for photographs to illustrate each type of ecosystem. Ask them to explain, using the photos, what makes one ecosystem healthy and the other impoverished and homogeneous.
