Activity 6: Activity Overview
This activity provides an opportunity for the students to learn about succession.
They do a visual scrutiny of a pictorial diagram on the changes that occurred along the coastal areas and in the inland areas after two volcanoes erupted on the island
of Krakatoa. The main purpose of this activity is to hone the students’ observational skills as they investigate the sequence of changes that take place in succession. The students are also given a chance to explain the difference in succession that they note on the two areas affected by the volcanic eruption. This activity further brings into focus the role that humans have in shaping their environment.
Preparation and Materials Needed
Preparation
Before this activity, remind the students to bring their books so that the required diagram analysis on the succession on Krakatoa will go smoothly. As a backup,
you can have copies made of Blackline Master Ecology 6.1: Succession on Krakatoa. Although the analysis may be done in groups, ensure that each student has a copy
of the diagram. To facilitate the learning process, you should have a deeper understanding of what the questions are asking for, to help the students be more focused in their study of the diagram.
